Description
Have your students practice adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals with a real-world Christmas math activity.  This unique "menu" style activity follows a story of a family shopping for items needed in their Christmas Eve traditions.

Students will be given a grocery list along with a page of store items and their prices.  They will need to calculate the cost of the items along with sales tax, and figure out if the family has enough money to pay for it.  Spoiler alert!  They end up going over budget and must use coupons to bring their total down so that they can pay for their Christmas Eve items.  They must find the deduction for each coupon and apply this along with the sales tax to find their new total.  There are also some short answer questions about the activity to allow them to explain their thinking.

This is a perfect way to review decimals before Winter Break!

Standards:  5.NBT.7

How Can You Use This?

Use this activity during the last 1-2 weeks of school before winter break.  It can be assigned as a culminating project for Numbers in Base Ten or just as a fun activity to informally assess student mastery of decimal operations.  This is perfect to leave for a sub if you need a day off.

Differentiate: Assign some or all of the pages to your students, depending on how much of a challenge they need.
