Teach your students how to recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. This standard can be confusing, but not anymore! This comprehensive printable resource pack provides everything you need to teach 5th Grade Place Value (including a second version of the file that has been modified to align with the NEW Georgia Math Standards for 5th Grade).

There are mini-lessons for both whole numbers and decimals. I recommend using the whole number version in the first few weeks of school. It’s a great review of the 4th grade standard and will get them familiar with the concept before adding in decimals. You can use the mini-lesson on decimal place value at the beginning of your decimals unit.

Introduce each skill with the detailed set of notes and sample problems. I suggest doing this in a whole group setting and pulling the PDF up on a Smartboard so students can annotate over the models.

Gradually release students to practice independently using the practice pages. Check for understanding and mastery after teaching each skill using the exit tickets.

When all skills have been taught, assess with the final quiz when you feel students are ready.
