Use visual models along with the standard algorithm to quickly and effectively teach your students how to add and subtract decimals using this digital and printable resource pack
Students will have a hands-on approach to “see” what it looks like to add and subtract decimals and connect this method to the standard algorithm. It’s great for visual & kinesthetic learners as well as students that may struggle with memorizing algorithms.
This resource is complete, comprehensive, and easy to follow with a clear format. It is low-prep, easy to assign to a sub, and contains engaging digital activities for use with Google Classroom.
Supports Common Core Standards (CCSS): 5.NBT.7

How Can You Use This?
Introduce each skill with the detailed set of notes and sample problem. I suggest doing this in a whole group setting and pulling the PDF up on a Smartboard so students can annotate over the models.
Gradually release students to practice independently using the practice pages. There are 2 provided as well as a “create your own” page. This is great to provide to students who are fast finishers or understand the concept quickly. They can create their own and switch their page with a friend and have them complete it.
Use the exit tickets to determine mastery and create small groups for differentiation. When both skills have been taught, provide additional practice using the mixed practice activities. Review both skills with the interactive Task Tents™ and assess mastery with the final quiz when you feel students are ready.
